India seems to be on a high these days . What ever be the newspaper or magazine , it has India shining painted all over it . All of them talk about something called GDP which I faintly remember studying in 8th standard . GDP is growing at a rate of more than 8 pc for the last few years which some say is a indication of India becoming a super power ,something that I totally disagree with. Then there are these Mergers. The M word is the latest fashion in corporate India these days .Whether it is the quietly done Birla-Novelis deal , the hard fought Tata-Corus auction or the long drawn Arcelor – Mittal battle , it is seen as the coming of age of Indian entrepreneurship or business acumen whatever you call it . In the midst all this hullabaloo “IT” which was seen as the spearhead of India’s development has lost its sheen . No more is India just about TCS, Satyam and Infosys . It is about everything now , right from steel industries to construction companies to private airlines to the horribly copied Indian fashion and even the blatantly plagiarized indian movies .Even though the TATAs , Ambanis and Birla were there much before these IT companies gained prominence they where not , atleast to me , portrayed as the face of developing India as these IT biggies . No company can even think of the kind of adulation that Infosys has got . Being part of this IT industry , whatever be the downside , gives everyone a sense of satisfaction and settlement and more so the ability to pay higher EMIs (*wink*) . But everyone outside seem to have lot of complaints . All of them want to get into IT or atleast want their children to and nobody is stopping them but when either of these doesn’t happen , they do what they can do best , criticize the industry .
I was watching a debate on IT industry on television which obviously was between a group of IT professionals and a non-IT cum conservative lot who think of themselves as the bearers of morality and culture in this world . Through out the debate , all I could sense was a feeling of jealously in the opposition which comes from their idea that IT professionals earn way too much than they do .While it is true that it is higher than many industries , it is not at all too much to blame the IT people for all the problems that is prevalent in the Indian society today which includes drug abuse , molestation , abandoning parents and even price hikes . According to them , somehow working in an IT company made a guy marry one of his colleagues against the will of his parents and abandon them. The story was that his father for all of the 20 plus year dotingly brought him up sacrificing all his pleasures and that guy’s sudden wealth(because of an IT job) made him independent (as if it was something bad) and arrogant. Is this the first case of this kind we are seeing in India ? . How can profession change your nature and attitude? This guy would have done the same wherever he would have gone to work . And then there are all these complaints about rave parties and drug abuse . According to them most IT pros go to rave parties every week , use drugs and molest women there .What crap ! . Anybody who has 1000 rupees to his/her disposal every week can go to a disco. From people i know there are many who party but none dope . Most of them pick up their bags to go their hometowns in the weekends to see their families than indulge in revelry . Also , as always with the media , the television program itself didn’t do anything to help the IT image .It sort of helped the bashers . The program started with an IT professional bragging, showing off her lavish home , laptop (probably her project’s) , big plasma TV and new car and above all attributing all this luxury to the IT field she is working in . Also as part of the episode , an all Chennai survey was conducted to know from people whether they were jealous on IT professionals .
IT pros these days are connected with lavishness , rudeness , arrogance and debauchery .Not long ago these were all connected only with cine stars and fashion models . Even land price and Auto fare hikes are blamed on them . It looks like autowallahs in chennai fleece people because IT employees don’t bargain and give what they are asked for and the same is expected out of other people . if u ask me I haven’t seen a honest autowallah in Chennai in my life .Though there is little sympathy about IT pros working like dogs and not having a proper personal life many think they deserve it . This attitude really is disgusting . But then this is all a bloody farce. The same people who complain don’t stop their children from getting into this field , only prefer IT brides and bridegrooms for their children and feel very proud about them too. If at all they even get remotely connected with IT . everything takes a sudden turn .The same mouths say that IT industry has brought India out of poverty , has made the middle class stronger and is a symbol of Indian intellect.
So as the title says is there something wrong ? Definitely , not with the industry but with the people.
Amen.
