This week it was Hugh Grant in the “From the Actor’s Studio” show in SONY PIX and boy he was good .One of my favourite actors and the coolest one among them . Brutally frank and absolutely hilarious this man lights up the screen whenever he appears . I saw the show for just five minutes but he admitted to fornicating and teachers having a crush on him and one of them passing him though he performed miserably in a vocabulary test . I was too tired to watch the show further but then decided to take a vocabulary test since it has been so many years I last learnt English . Not knowing how to do it without a computer I took my dictionary and thought of picking words at random and trying to guess their meaning . I don’t know whether to call it a vocabulary test or a semantics test but then realized if there is something common between Hugh Grant and Me it is the performance in the test . I had no idea what many words meant. So the grapes turned sour by the time I crossed my tenth “I-have-no-idea-what-this-means” word and consoled myself with the shameless excuse that I am an Indian and its enough if I know as much English so as to manage my studies and profession .Who cares if “Savant” means a scholar and “psephology” means “study of election trends” , words I may not ever use in my life and there is always the same dictionary if at all I encounter them . Then came a thought about what is the minimal vocabulary I can do away with in a normal day in my life . At work it is just enough if I know what “Dear” , “Team” , “Regards” , “Bugs” , “Meeting” , “deadline” , “Thank you” , “Build” , “version” and “Deployment” means . Apart from these the vocabulary that I use is not from English but mostly from C# . Outside work I can just do away with knowing what “babe” and “Amazing” means , both often used in the same sentence(*wink*) apart from the normal English . So went happily to sleep and got up in the morning only to refer the dictionary thrice for the first four sentences I read from today’s Hindu(needless to say you should laugh here) .
So the fool in the heading is me and I have no idea why I came up with that and don’t even know whether it is grammatically correct but then that is the very point I am trying to drive here.
P.S : I am a pretty normal guy and don’t involve myself in weird activities like taking a self- compiled vocabulary test . This is the first and hope this is the last too .(*wink*).
