"Eve"il Intentions

If you ask a man how does he feel about a woman who has killed her husband, most probably he would say he feels sorry for her .But if you ask a woman what to do about a man who has beaten his wife ,”Hang Him” would be the response mostly . This is the attitude men and women have about the other sex in India . Unfortunately for Indian men this feeling is more intense among educated women who think they are the saviors of the uneducated and rural women . The problem with this attitude is not only blind sympathy but also vindictiveness against the other sex . The recent “domestic violence law” introduced by the minister of women and child welfare is just that .

Nobody in the all the panels that was constituted for this law did realize what it is up to .The law is very offensive than being protective that it does more harm to men than it does to protect women .Its only objective is to enslave men who according to Renuka Chowdry have no other work except beating and torturing women. One of the excerpts from the law mentions that “ any verbal or physical abuse on a women or her siblings in a present or a past relationship is deemed as domestic violence”. As Karan Thapar put it rightly if u call the brother of a girl who was your girlfriend 10 yrs ago “an ass”, you can be put in jail . Shocking!!!!!!! It is but was is even more appalling is the fact that the minister not only accepts that the law can be misused but most definitely wants it to be misused . Immature and sarcastic comments like “it is men’s turn to suffer” and “…it is just that I have so much pity for men” may amuse her but it is not going to help her in the course of implementing this law . So then what happens to “gender equality” now ? Is it still “gender equality” if men suffer and women become the so called “greater sex” ?

There is not even a modicum of doubt that women in India are suffering even in this age and it is very unfortunate that this is happening in a country which is slated to be the next super power. Also there is no doubt that these atrocities should stop and women should be given equal rights. But then taking an amateurish ,short-sighted and sentimental approach in eliminating these atrocities will not only gain opposition but also cause the law to fade away in due course. That is the reason why all the laws that have been brought in till now have achieved little. . There should be a comprehensive and holistic approach (which is missing in every law that is made in india) which aims at the root cause and devises mechanisms which gives provides permanent solutions . Steps like increasing the literacy rate, building confidence and encouraging women to have an active career and achieve financial independence should be the way going forward. It is a well known fact that women are gullible only when they are illiterate or financially dependent on their spouse.

There is also another interesting aspect of “domestic violence” . If you have noticed this term is more synonymous with the “Mother-in-law” atrocities than “wife” beating . So why are only men targeted? Mothers, sisters, mothers-in-law and sisters-in-law are more responsible for the atrocities against women than all the men put together, at least as equally responsible. The mothers –in- law are the ones who prefer a grandson than a granddaughter, the mothers are the ones who bring up the girls differently than the boys making them submissive in nature and also imbuing with the idea that their ultimate aim in life is to get married, serve their husbands and bring up the kids and the sisters-in-laws are the ones who treat their brother’s wife as an alien even if she is of her age group . The important point to be drawn from this is though they have suffered they consider it a privilege to treat the girl who gets married into their family badly . All this are clear indicators that even if all the men change because of this law, women are still bound to suffer because it is the women who are enslaving themselves and others.

I also don’t know whether it is because Renuka Chowdry thinks that all women are innocent in India or because of the total disregard for men that she thinks this law will not be misused by women and that it is ok for men to suffer because women have been suffering for so long . Cant she realize if the man in the house who in most families is the bread winner and the head of the family is punished , it will affect the whole family and the lady in the house mainly . Cant she realize it further increases the hatred of men towards women and can split houses which are already torn and that equal participation and acceptance is required from men to make any law successful.

I don’t want a Man’s world out there but with people like our minister and laws like this one I think a Woman’s world will be far worse.
